The Return of the Fast Car

by on 2009/12/25

The following cars have all made a big impact in the hot hatch sector over the past year. Now remember, there are 'hot-hatches' and then there are 'really hot-hatches' - we are only talking about the latter.

The Ford Focus RS is the car that first springs to my mind. Introduced earlier in 2009 the Focus RS made some big ripples in the motor industry. It's based on the Focus ST and really is a powerhouse of a car. This car can't really be missed as it comes in a range of really bright and vibrant colours, such as lime green. The Focus RS can do 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds - this is mainly down to its 305PS engine and advanced suspension.

This hot hatch can reach speeds of up to 163mph - making it a serious contender in this category.

Another contender in this category is the Volkswagen Golf. Volkswagen released their latest Golf in January this year. There are two diesels available from launch, a new2.0-litre TDI 108bhp and a higher-powered 138bhp version. Petrol engines comprise a 1.4-litre 78bhp, 1.6-litre 100bhp and two 1.4-litre TSI units with 120bhp or 158bhp.

Seat have announced that a supercharged Leon Cupra R will go on sale in early 2010. It is set to have a 261bhp turbocharged engine giving the driver loads of speed and an exhilarating driving performance. The Seat Leon Cupra R is the most powerful production car Seat has ever made - which shows you just how impressive this hot hatch really is. This car reaches 0-62mph in just 6.1 seconds, however its top speed is slightly lower than the Focus RS at 155mph.

More recently Mazda have announced that the Mazda3 MPS will go on sale from October this year. As with the Seat Leon Cupra R this hot hatch also reaches 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds and also has max speed of155mph.

The Mazda3 MPS has a 256bhp in the 2.3-litre engine. The high-speeds are down to improved aerodynamics and changes with the styling. Amazingly this car has managed to meet the Euro 5 emissions standard as its low weight has helped it to cut emissions. So with this trendy Mazda you get a hot-hatch that is not too bad for the environment...it's got to be a winner!

There are so many more hot-hatches around these are just the pick of the bunch at the moment. The Ford RS is probably the most high-profile - but all three will give you an exciting and enthralling motoring experience.
